My time at Calne has shaped me hugely, both academically and personally, and I am thankful for all the opportunities afforded to me.
The dedication of teachers throughout my time at St Mary’s has encouraged a genuine love of learning, and the committed support of staff, academic and pastoral, has enabled to me to develop confidence in all aspects of life. This has helped me to develop my independence and to take advantage of opportunities when presented to me, which will benefit me in my future studies and career.
Being at Calne enabled me to participate in a range of trips within the UK and abroad, including a cultural and language trip to France, a Latin trip to Italy and a music tour to Poland. These have enriched my education and understanding of my subjects, and have developed my awareness of other cultures.
A highlight of my time has been my involvement with the music department, which has provided me with opportunities that would not otherwise have been open to me. Some memorable events include featuring with the chamber choir on a live BBC Radio 4 Morning Service broadcast, playing in the orchestra in Salisbury Cathedral under the conductorship of renowned composer Bob Chilcott, and having a poem that I had written commissioned into the Christmas Carol Every Gift by Will Todd, which was sung by the chamber choir at the school Carol Service. I have also had a number of opportunities to perform within school as a soloist. I really appreciate all the chances that I have been provided with, which have fostered my love of music, and led me to study the subject at degree level – a career path that may not have otherwise been possible for me without everything St Mary’s has to offer.
