Celebrating 150

In 2023 we will be celebrating 150 years of St Mary's Calne. This is a wonderful opportunity to bring together all the communities past and present associated with St Mary's, and to celebrate 150 years of friendship, experiences, ambition, and positive social change for all those connected with us.

During the year, we will celebrate the people who have shaped the school over the past 150 years. Our aim is to ensure the St Mary's Calne Community of parents, former parents, alumnae and staff are included in the celebrations - it's the perfect time to reconnect with each other and the school.

There are many events planned over the course of the year and more detail can be found below.

In the February Donaldson week, students will go back in time to the founding of St Mary’s Calne.

LIV will enjoy an extra special day with local actors, from Knapsack productions, learning all about Victorian life, with a particular focus on the founding of St Mary’s. The first session will have them as Victorian school girls doing lessons that the girls would have studied in 1873 with the first ever Headmistress, Miss Richardson, taking their lesson!

Later that week, the whole school will engage in a quiz based on the history of the school. Students will be encouraged to explore St Mary’s past via a series of eye-catching boards, displayed throughout the campus during the first week of February. A multiple-choice quiz will take place in Chapel with company points up for grabs plus prizes for top student answers.

The White Horse Sculpture Project will be held during Donaldson Week in February 2023 and celebrates our Wiltshire heritage. Art scholars, alumnae and members of our local community will be invited to create clay maquettes of the Cherhill White Horse.

An exhibition of these will be held in the Library and the winning entry will be made into a large bronze sculpture, kindly sponsored by the CGA, for the school grounds.  We will also create 20 mini limited edition bronze sculptures which will be auctioned off to raise funds.

An Archive Exhibition will be held at the Calne Heritage Centre from 1st March until the end of April.  We will host a Coffee Morning on Wednesday 26th April for Calne-based former staff, local families and friends of St Mary's to attend.

Handel's Messiah will be performed at the University Church, Oxford as part of our Spring Concert on Thursday 16th March and will include our current choirs and orchestras.

ENCORE - A Dramatic Reunion of Talent & Friendship: Saturday 29th April 2023. A special one-day event with an evening performance to showcase some of the great dramatic and musical performances at Calne. It will be an opportunity for you to relive your theatre days at Calne, reprise a leading role, take part in an ensemble or be a member of the audience and, of course, be with your friends. ENCORE will be ably led by Mrs Dudley Fryar (Director of Vocal Studies at Calne), with Miss Lilian Leadbetter (former Director of Drama) returning as Guest of Honour. They will work together and present a wonderful evening - a showcase of short dramatic and musical highlights. For more details of the event and how to participate, Please click here  to access a special club where you will find all the information.

An Alumnae Garden Party will be held in the beautiful Lime Kiln Gardens and include a tour of school and a delicious afternoon tea! More details to follow.

Regional Drinks' Parties/Coffee Mornings will be held around the country hosted by parents, alumnae and past parents.  Our wider community will be invited. These will be wonderful opportunities to reconnect, share stories and celebrate St Mary's.

The Head's Lunch will take place on Saturday 20th May for former Headmistresses, Head Girls and Governors. Please save the date!

An extra-special Sports' Day will take place on Saturday 10th June.   An opportunity for all to get involved and celebrate the important place sport has at St Mary's.

A Whole School Picnic will be on Sunday 25th June at the White Horse in Cherhill, and will replicate the many picnics and trips that past pupils and staff took.  An outdoor service will be led by Fr Jonathan Beach to replace the normal Sunday evening Chapel Service.

A Celebration and Thanksgiving Service will take place at Salisbury Cathedral, from 3pm, to embrace all members of the St Mary's Calne Community. More information to follow.

The London Art Exhibition will be held in early November 2023.  This will be our fifth exhibition in London and a larger celebration and showcase of St Mary's art, sculpture, textiles and mixed media.  As usual, we will host a private view and, on this occasion, we will incorporate an online/live auction element of the works on display to raise money for the Chysalis Campaign.

The Sound of Music will be the finale to the year and be performed on 30th November, 1st and 2nd December 2023. More information to follow.

Following on from the huge success and fun of our anniversary year, we will be publishing a new school book encapsulating the stories, images, memories and anecdotes from our archives, more recent leavers, pupils, current & former staff and parents. This will be a colourful and creative book and be available to buy in 2024.
